Founder of Asher Guitars, Bill Asher, has worked with hundreds of musicians. From Paul Simon to Jackson Browne, he’s built guitars for many of the world’s top musicians. He’s also the owner of Asher Guitars & Lap Steels, a boutique guitar company in Los Angeles. Asher Guitars focuses on constructing fine instruments, as well as providing excellent customer service. They’ve earned a reputation for producing high-end guitars that rival big brands like Fender.
Bill Asher began his guitar career in 1982 when he started an apprenticeship with Jeff Lunsford. Lunsford helped him develop a clear vision for his future. During his time with Lunsford, Asher also continued to expand his knowledge of the guitar business. He learned how to custom design and build guitars, as well as repair vintage instruments.
After four years of apprenticeship, Asher decided to open his own shop, Guitar Traditions, in Santa Monica. Asher continued to expand his knowledge of guitar repair. He’s worked with many of the best luthiers in the Los Angeles area.

Among the many SALSA members, Bill Asher may be the most accomplished, although his business ventures are not without their share of controversy. His efforts have not always been free of the censorship afflicting the ’70s and ’80s. However, he has gotten a leg up on the competition by being a member of the Houston Bar Association’s real estate law section, and by participating in the monthly Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinics of SALSA.
Asher started off his professional career as a trombonist in the Armed Forces Signal Corps, but it was a stint in the music industry that led to his most lucrative gigs. He has worked with such luminaries as Michael Phillip Mossman, Jason Jurzak, and Jason Derulo. One of his most notable gigs was directing or producing over 100 episodes of Bewitched. This was in addition to his time spent with the Baby Soda Jazz Band, a trad jazz band based in Brooklyn.
Asher has garnered many accolades over the years, including being named a member of SALSA. He has been a regular at SALSA’s monthly Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinics, and has served as a mentor for SALSA volunteers working in the real estate industry.
